This personal injury glossary provides explanations in plain English of a number of technical terms you may encounter in the process of pursuing a personal injury claim.
Settlement - Agreement of compensation to bring an end a legal matter.
Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) - An organisation tasked with protecting the public by ensuring that solicitors work to a high standard of practice.
Statement of case - A statement of case is any of a number of formal documents used to outline the details of a case. See “particulars of claim” and “defence”.
Statement of truth - A signed statement found at the bottom of all court documents, witness statements and applications to the court. The statement of truth is a statement by the parties that they believe the facts they have put in the document are true.
Stay of proceedings - A ruling by the court to bring a legal matter to a halt.
Structured settlement - The opposite of a lump sum payment. Payment of compensation is broken down into smaller amounts and paid out over a period of time instead of all at once.
Summary judgment - A method of dealing with a legal matter without a court trial.
