This personal injury glossary provides explanations in plain English of a number of technical terms you may encounter in the process of pursuing a personal injury claim.

Acknowledgement of service - The response by a defendant when a legal matter is brought to court. The defendant recognises that the matter has been sent to court for the purpose of a judge deciding the outcome of the legal matter in question.

Admission - A voluntary acknowledgement that something is correct.

Affidavit - A written statement of fact drafted by someone of sound mind and taken under oath.

Alternative dispute resolution - Different methods of resolving a legal matter without the need to take the case through court.

Appeal - To ask a more senior court or person to review a decision made because it is believed to be wrong.

Application - The formal act of making a request for something.
