Skimming (cloning)
This is where a card can be duplicated by ‘skimming’ off the information held on the magnetic strip of a card. This is often done by using a PIN Entry Device (PED). This could be concealed in the pocket of the person you are paying or even attached to the payment machine. The card is then swiped through the PED and the information on the magnetic strip is copied. At the same time the PIN is observed or recorded to allow a cloned card to be made up and used fraudulently.
Internet fraud
With the upsurge in the use of the internet it has also increased the opportunity for people to commit credit card fraud through the obtaining of card details. False merchant sites have been set up with the sole aim of encouraging people to reveal their credit/debit card details with the security code. These are then used to fraudulently obtain goods or funds.
If you are accused of this type of fraud you will need to seek expert advice to defend yourself. There will often be a bewildering amount of documents detailing thousands of alleged fraudulent transactions and you need to know that the solicitor defending you has detailed experience of dealing with that kind of documentation. It is very easy to miss important detail which is why you need an expert.
