Research has shown that the number of people killed or seriously injured on Wigan roads has dropped by 36% in 2010.
Figures released by the Department for Transport has shown that there were 62 people killed or seriously injured on the boroughs roads in 2010 as opposed to 97 in 2009. The figures also show that over the five previous years, the borough has seen a 40% decrease in casualties since 2005.
These figures are positive news, and illustrate that in general terms the borough's drivers appear to be driving in a safer manner resulting in a lot more local families being saved from the heartache of losing a family member in distressing circumstances or having to cope with a serious injury from a crash.
However, on the contrary, it still means that 62 local families did suffer the distress of losing a family member or coping with the aftermath of a serious collision - are any of these deaths and serious injuries avoidable? The road safety charity Brake has urged local authorities to continue to work towards minimising the amount of collision on the borough's roads by ensuring funding for road safety services.
