Nestlé’s decision to dismiss CEO Laurent Freixe following revelations of an undisclosed romantic relationship with a junior colleague has reignited debate around workplace relationships and the responsibilities of senior leaders. The company cited a breach of its code of conduct, with concerns raised about conflicts of interest and the potential for reputational harm.

Mr Freixe’s departure, without an exit package, reflects a growing trend across industries: organisations are taking a firmer stance on relationships where there is a clear imbalance of power. From McDonald’s to BP, similar cases have shown that even consensual relationships can carry serious legal and cultural risks.

Commenting on the case, Philip Richardson, Partner and Head of Employment Law at Stephensons, said:

“The departure of Nestlé’s CEO following a workplace relationship with a junior colleague highlights the growing scrutiny around power dynamics in professional environments. In today’s climate, organisations are increasingly aware of the reputational and legal risks posed by relationships where there is a clear imbalance of authority.

Senior executives are held to a higher standard—not just in terms of performance but also conduct. Where a relationship involves a subordinate, it can raise serious concerns about consent, favouritism, and the potential for future claims of harassment or unfair treatment. Even if consensual, such relationships can undermine trust within teams and expose the employer to liability.

Many companies now have clear policies prohibiting relationships between senior and junior staff, or requiring disclosure. Breaching these policies, especially when transparency is lacking, can be grounds for dismissal, as seen in recent cases across sectors. Employers must act decisively to protect their culture and ensure fairness for all employees.

This case serves as a reminder that leadership is not just about business results, but also about integrity and accountability.”

As businesses continue to navigate evolving expectations around workplace conduct, this case serves as a timely reminder of the importance of transparency, policy enforcement, and ethical leadership.
