GMC introduces new whistle blowing helpline

  • Posted

The GMC launched a new confidential helpline on 10 December 2012 which allows doctors to raise any concerns regarding patient safety and obtain advice on any issues they are dealing with.

The helpline is launched along side a new online aid which provides doctors with another way of reporting any concerns. The helpline will be operated by trained advisors who will be able to forward information about doctors or organisations to the GMC for investigation, or any other relevant bodies.

The GMC sets out clear guidance about a doctor’s duty to put patients’ interests first which overrides a doctor’s personal and professional loyalties.

The Chief Executive of the GMC, Niall Dickson, said that: “Being a good doctor is more than simply being a good clinician. It requires a commitment to improve the quality of services and a willingness to speak up when things are not right – this is not always easy, but it is at the heart of medical professionalism.”
