Woman killed after being hit by lorry

  • Posted

I’ve read this week that, Mrs Brooks, a cleaner at my former high school St Josephs RC High School and Sports College, has been killed after being hit by a lorry at Armstrongs Environmental Services Ltd, Horwich.

It has been reported that Mrs Brooks was an employee of the firm when the accident happened at 8.20am on Monday 14th November 2011 in front of shocked work colleagues. An investigation is being carried out by Greater Manchester Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

The Health and Safety Executive report that every year, about 70 people are killed and 2000 seriously injured in accidents involving vehicles in and around workplaces. A significant number of these occur during deliveries and collections. Unless effective precautions are taken, people are at risk from:

  • Pedestrians being hit by moving vehicles
  • People falling from vehicles
  • Vehicles turning over
  • People being hit by objects falling from vehicles

Visibility, speed, lighting, mechanical defects, inadequate markings are all factors which can contribute to accidents.

For further information about how to avoid accidents involving vehicles in and around the workplace visit the www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/

Those who witnessed the accident may very well begin to suffer from the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is a severe anxiety disorder which can last for months or years if not diagnosed and treated early with many victims of the disorder experiencing flashbacks of traumatic event. There are lots of support groups and treatment providers that we work with to help victims of post traumatic stress disorder so speak to us if you have been affected by this tragic event or witnessed a similar accident.
