Winter weather - staying safe and warm

Snow days - employee rights and employer responsibilities

As we move into the winter months and the days become colder, it is important that we are prepared for the climate change to ensure that we remain safe and warm.

Often we are just not ready for the cold weather and so here are some top tips:

For the home

  1. Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks
  2. Ensure your home heating system has been serviced to ensure that it is working properly
  3. Make sure you have a safe alternative heating source for your home in the event your main supply breaks down

For the car

  1. Ensure your tyres are safe – by doing so this can avoid an accident. Skidding on black ice due to unsafe tyres can be a terrifying experience
  2. In the event that you do breakdown, ensure that you have a phone charger in your car, blankets, food and water, a first aid kit and torches (and spare batteries)

Out and about

  1. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions – layers of clothing are much more effective than one big jumper! Remember hats, scarves and gloves
  2. Make sure you have the correct footwear too – heels are just not going to help when the pavements are icy! Wear footwear with good grips and take your time when walking as falling on ice could lead to a very nasty injury
