Solicitor becomes fully accredited by Contentious Trusts and Probate Association

  • Posted

A Leigh solicitor who specialises in acting for people with inheritance disputes has become a fully accredited member of the Association of Contentious Trusts and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS).

Heather Korwin-Szymanowska is among an elite group of solicitors across the country to secure this recognition and is Stephensons’ dedicated inheritance dispute expert.

She became an associate member two years ago, following a two-year accreditation at the College of Law in Chester. Now, following a further application and with five years’ experience as specialist solicitor in this area of law under her belt, Heather has advanced to become a full member.

Heather advises members of the public who are involved in a dispute over a Will, as well as estates, trusts and Court of Protection issues. As a member of ACTAPS she must follow a set code of conduct in dealing with clients.

Heather has successfully concluded many inheritance disputes cases over the last five years. She has helped numerous clients challenge Wills and estates, where they have either been cut out, or have not been able to inherit due to the rules of intestacy. Heather deals with claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, as well as challenges against the validity of Wills due to lack of capacity or fraud. She has also conducted cases where unmarried couples have lived together without making their wishes known in a Will, often leading to family disputes over property and other assets.

She said: “The death of a partner, parent or other loved one is always distressing. This stress can be increased further when the Will is challenged and claims are made by others to share the estate. It’s my job to provide timely and sympathetic advice on the wide ranging legal implications of making or defending such a claim.

“Holding the ACTAPS accreditation lets my clients know that they are being advised by a solicitor who has specialist knowledge in this very emotive area of law.”
