The rise of the neighbour dispute

  • Posted

A survey by Which? has discovered that over 3 million people suffer with problem neighbours.

As a solicitor specialising in neighbour disputes this comes as no big surprise to me. There are an astonishing number of issues that someone can have with their neighbour. Often it starts off as a relatively small disagreement and then snowballs into something much bigger. It can be a dispute over a boundary position, works that the neighbour has carried out or noise problems, to name just a few.

These types of dispute are described as being worse than a divorce (because after a divorce you generally don’t have to live with the person anymore). In the present economic climate it is becoming more difficult to escape a problem neighbour. It is estimated that up to a quarter of homeowners in Britain who have mortgages are trapped unable to sell and buy another home due to negative equity or lack of deposit to move onto a new mortgage.

This makes it all the more important to receive good advice about how to deal with your dispute. If possible you should try and resolve these disputes directly with your neighbour by simply speaking to them but when this becomes impossible I can assist you in providing professional advice and trying to resolve the dispute on your behalf without the need for a Court case. However, sometimes Court is the only way forward but it is important to put the right foot forwards when it comes to these disputes. Please refer to our neighbour disputes section for more information on the types of neighbour disputes we can assist you with.

If you would like advice or assistance in relation to these kind of disputes then please get in touch with me on 01616 966 229 or grj@stephensons.co.uk.
