Deaths from hospital viruses falling

  • Posted

The Office of National Statistics has recently confirmed that the number of deaths from the viruses MRSA and Clostridium difficile, or C.diff, is continuing to fall.

Deaths from MRSA fell by 20% from 364 in 2011 to 292 in 2012 and there were 1,646 deaths from C.difficile in 2012 compared with 2,053 in the previous year.

This is a success story for NHS and Government policy which has focused heavily on hospital acquired infections over a number of years. The prevention and treatment of MRSA has been a particular success with deaths reduced by more than two thirds in the past five years.
