John Blott
Biography
John read Classics at Durham University then served as a Police Officer for 26 years before retraining as a solicitor.
John holds a first-class honours degree in law, a Masters degree in European business law awarded with distinction and a post-graduate qualification in legal practice, also awarded with distinction.
Originally specialising in housing law and litigation, John’s previous experiences and knowledge of public services brought him to the civil liberties team at Stephensons. John now specialises and is passionate for the work that he conducts daily in representing his claimant clients in seeking to tackle abuses of power in the public services.

Claims against local authorities relating to unlawful deprivation of liberty (children and adults in social care), historical abuse, removal of a child from the family home under a Section 20 Agreement, failure to remove a child/children from their home and breaches of the Human Rights Act 1998 following Family Court proceedings.
Claims against the police including those for false imprisonment (wrongful arrest by the police and unlawful detention), Police assault & battery claims, malicious prosecution, misfeasance in public office, trespass and withholding evidence.
Claims against the prison service including those for delays to release from custody, assault by either another prisoner or prison staff, breach of the Data Protection Act by copies of personal information being unlawfully sent to another prisoner or to a third party and human rights breaches involving death in custody, inhumane, degrading or torturous treatment and restricting family visits.
Compensation claims against His Majesty’s Courts & Tribunals Service where the court has failed to keep an accurate record of an individual’s data or has failed to update the record when circumstances have changed.
John is a trustee of a charity which provides housing and welfare advice in his community and is a member of the Senior Common Room of St Chad’s College at Durham University. In his spare time he informally teaches Greek and Latin and is also a keen church bell-ringer.
