Warning: unofficial patent and trade mark reminders

  • Posted
Coronavirus and employment law - what are my rights?

This week the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has issued a warning to all UK patent and trade mark owners of businesses being approached with unofficial trademark renewal reminders.

According to the IPO, trade mark owners have received unsolicited reminders from the following companies offering to renew intellectual property rights for a substantial fee:

  • Patent and Trademark Agency Limited
  • Trade Mark Renewal Services Limited

The IPO asks anyone who receives such a notice not to exchange any monies until they have checked which exact services are being offered and the legitimacy of the provider.

The abovementioned businesses are not linked to any government institutions and no one is obliged to pay their enhanced fees.

Three months prior to the renewal date of your trade mark you or your recorded representative will receive an official renewal reminder from the Intellectual Property Office. This notice will explain the straightforward process of renewing your trade mark, if you wish to do so.

If you have received correspondence you believe to be suspicious please report this to Action Fraud.
