Stephensons, the national full service law firm, is today showing its support for the World Mental Health Day 2015 by offering a five per cent discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA).
One in three over-65s across the UK will go on to develop dementia. The majority of this group fails to plan for any reduction in their mental capacity by discussing their wishes with family and friends.
A Lasting Power of Attorney will give anyone control over what happens to them if they have an accident or suffer form an illness making them either permanently or temporarily unable to make decisions for themselves.
Loved ones will not have access to funds to pay for care or make any decisions regarding health and welfare, or about property, if there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place without a much more costly application to court having to be made.
World Mental Health Day takes place 10 October, Saturday, this year and is the annual global celebration of mental health awareness and advocacy.
Rob Gore, Partner at Stephensons said: “We see many families whose loved ones have either been seriously injured as a result of an accident or suffered from an illness reducing their mental capacity. But without a Lasting Power of Attorney in place they have no immediate right to make some of the crucial and often time-sensitive decisions. Applying for a Lasting Power of Attorney when already in a difficult situation can prove to be a lengthy process at a time when it may be urgently needed. It is advisable to have one in place beforehand, as a precaution“.
