Remondis to open UK's largest indoor waste management facility

Waste recycling company Remondis UK Ltd has acquired new premises in Prescot, Merseyside, which will house one of the largest undercover waste management/recycling/transfer facilities in the UK.

Remondis provides recycling and waste management services to industry and communities and aims to return as many materials as possible back into the commercial cycle through its complete chain of services. Worldwide, the company operates a network of 500 plants.

Construction work is now underway at the former BICC (Pirelli) Rod Rollers site on Carr Lane, Prescot, to transform it into a recycling and recovery site for commercial, industrial and construction waste.

Remondis is relocating to the Prescot site as it has outgrown its existing site in Blackrod, near Bolton. The new Prescot facility will be capable of handling up to 69,000 tonnes of recyclable materials and waste each year.

North West law firm Stephensons Solicitors LLP acted on behalf of Remondis in what proved to be quite a complicated site acquisition, as well as assisting in many ancillary matters including construction contracts

David Baybut, commercial property partner at Stephensons, said: “Remondis is part of one of the largest organisations in the world dealing with the water management and the recycling industry. This new site will make use of the best available technology in the waste management sector.

“There were various barriers to securing ownership of this site, which included satisfying conditions in relation to planning and environmental licenses, site assembly, easements, release of restrictive covenants and varying of existing property rights. All of which have now been overcome.”
