Blackbrook Royals JRLFC Under 8s are now sporting new head guards thanks to a donation from St Helens law firm, Stephensons Solicitors LLP.
The rugby team must wear head guards during training and matches, and with the previous guards looking a little on the worn side, Stephensons stepped in with a £500 donation to fund the new equipment for 20 players.
Danielle Sherwood, a parent of one the young players, contacted Stephensons for support. She said: “When the club was first formed it was decided that the children who played there would not pay a signing on fee or any weekly subscriptions. This was so as not to discriminate against any child whose parents either could not or would not pay for their children to participate in our sport. This is still the same today and without generous donations from our sponsors and fund raising events organised by parents, the children that play here would have been denied this life changing opportunity. Every team involved has to raise their own money, all of which is spent on the team.
“The new head guards are a necessity, even in training, so we are really grateful to Stephensons for their support. As well as being an essential safety measure to protect our young players, the matching head guards will also enable us to look like a professional team when we play at home and away.”
Claire Stockley, as associate solicitor at Stephensons, which has an office in St Helens, presented the team with their new head guards. She said: “We always try to get involved and help out with projects in our local community. Blackbrook Royals is a local team which provides the local community with a safe place for children to play rugby, stay healthy and also make new friends. We are more than happy to help fund their head guards which encourage safety on the pitch.”
