- Have your credit agreements checked by us – they could be unfair and therefore the debt could actually be wiped out
- If you can’t pay, talk to your creditors and work out a payment solution, don’t bury your head in the sand
- Prioritise your debts, pay essentials such as your mortgage or rent, and council tax first
- Read the small print – don’t sign anything unless you know what the terms and conditions are and work out what your payments will be with interest included to avoid extra outlay
- Make a Will to protect your assets in the future and ensure your wishes are followed through. DIY Wills are not a good idea. Have your Will prepared by an experienced solicitor who will ensure the Will is legally binding
- If you’re cohabiting but unmarried, making a Will or cohabitation agreement could remove disputes over the property ownership later on
- Buying on the internet? Many people think they have fewer rights but you actually have more due to distance selling regulations which gives buyers a legal right to send most goods back within a week, for a full refund
- If you have bought a faulty item, don’t spend more money replacing it. You may be entitled to a free replacement. The Sale of Goods Act 1979 gives consumers limited protection for up to six years after purchase, regardless of store or manufacturer warranties
- Don’t deal with a house repossession alone, we have acted for many people in this situation and may be able to help come to an agreement with your lender
- Ensure when borrowing to buy a car, that you understand the finance being offered to you. Check the interest rate before you sign and check there is no outstanding finance, you could become liable for the debt if there is.
