Joint tenancy   

Two or more people having identical shares in land. If one tenant dies the entire property passes to the survivor regardless of the terms of any will.

Joint and several liability

Where two or more people share responsibility for repaying a debt they are responsible both individually and as a group, irrespective of their proportion of the debt. 

Judge   

An officer appointed to administer the law and who has authority to hear and try cases in a court of law.

Judgment         

The decision or sentence issued by a court in legal proceedings.

Judicial review 

The High Court reviews decisions of inferior (lower) courts, public bodies and other bodies to ensure that the decision making process has been lawful.

Jurisdiction       

The area and matters over which a court has legal authority.
