Katie Wilson

Trainee Solicitor

Biography

Katie is a trainee solicitor in the regulatory department, and specialises in regulatory defence, professional discipline and road traffic offences.

Katie joined Stephensons in March 2021 in the interventions department after graduating from the University of Liverpool with an upper second class (2:1) honours law degree in June 2020.

She subsequently completed the LPC with a Masters in Law, Business and Management at the University of Law, passing with distinction in July 2021.

Katie moved to join the regulatory department in December 2021 and is supervised by Carl Johnson.

Regulatory defence

Katie assists the partners and solicitors within the regulatory department specialising in numerous areas including:

  • Road traffic offences, such as totting up, drink/drug driving and speeding
  • Border Force and HMRC seizures
  • Firearms licencing
  • Road transport regulation and operator licencing, including public inquiries
  • Housing of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) licencing
  • Premises Licensing
  • Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) investigations, including MOT disciplinaries

Katie also assists with investigations and prosecutions by the following bodies:

  • Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
  • Food Standards Agency (FSA)
  • Trading Standards

Professional discipline

Additionally, Katie assists professionals at various stages of disciplinary proceedings before their regulatory bodies. She has experience in assisting professionals facing fitness to practise proceedings, from the initial referral and investigation stages, interim order hearings, through to final fitness to practise panel hearings and sanction review hearings.

  • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Teaching regulation Authority (TRA)

Ofsted and CQC

Katie assists businesses and individuals who face criminal and civil enforcement action brought by their regulatory bodies. She assists in representing registered providers and managers before the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted). Katie has assisted providers and managers in relation to the following:

  • Challenging inspection reports and ratings/gradings
  • Drafting complaints and internal reviews
  • Drafting representations in response to notices of proposal to refuse, cancel, or impose/vary conditions of registration
  • Appealing suspension notices, notices to impose or vary conditions on registration, notices to restrict accommodation, and cancellation notices to the First-Tier Tribunal (Care Standards Chamber)
  • Representation and advice in relation to criminal investigations

General crime

Katie also has experience working in the general crime department by preparing cases for criminal court proceedings, in both the Magistrates and Crown Court for a range of criminal offences, such as theft, robbery, assault, drug offences, and murder.
