The very important message of crossing the road safely was given to young pupils at primary schools in Leigh and Bolton this week.
To coincide with national Road Safety Week 2011, Stephensons Solicitors LLP provided an interactive training session to 7-11 year olds at two schools local to our offices, which centred on the Green Cross Code and safety while using the roads.
The workshops were led by Rebecca Shippam, an executive at the law firm, who acts for people who have been injured in road traffic accidents.
Rebecca’s first hand knowledge of working with victims of accidents led her to become a volunteer for BRAKE, the national charity which runs Road Safety Week each year. Rebecca is an ambassador of the BRAKE Road Safety Academy and carries out regular interactive workshops with students across the North West to raise their awareness of the hazards young road users may face.
Rebecca said: “Road deaths and injuries are a year-round problem, but Road Safety Week gives us a perfect opportunity to focus on the issue and help to educate young people on the dangers around them. It was a pleasure to meet the pupils and I hope that they have all taken away the message to stay safe while using the roads.”
Road safety is a significant concern in Britain, with the very latest figures last week highlighting an increase in the number of road deaths for the first time in five years.
There were 500 road deaths between April and June this year, compared with 467 during the same period in 2010.
