Stephensons is celebrating following the news that the firm has been short listed in two categories at the forth-coming Manchester Legal Awards 2013.
The regional awards, which celebrate the very best legal talent in Greater Manchester, has short listed human rights partner, Mike Pemberton as well as the firm’s Crime team for Crime/Regulatory team of the year.
Mike Pemberton, who is short listed in the legal aid lawyer of the year category, is a leading human rights and civil liberties solicitor whose cases have always challenged the boundaries and have even led to changes in the law.
In 2012, he took two of his cases to the European Court of Human Rights, one is pending judgment while the other was successful and will now lead to a change in the law.
The Crime team, of which Mike is a partner, has also been singled out as a finalist. The 52-strong team, led by managing partner Martin Jones, is an eminent force. Their strength is the team’s sheer depth and breadth of expertise, which conducts criminal defence work for individuals and businesses. The department has nationally recognised specialists in appeals, human rights, prison law and regulatory defence.
Three of the team’s partners – Mike Pemberton, Correna Platt and Sean Joyce – are listed as Leaders in the Field in the current edition of Chambers UK.
Mike and the Crime team will find out on March 7th if they have been successful, at a glittering gala dinner at Manchester’s Midland Hotel, at which more than 500 professionals are expected to attend.
