Kate is a Partner at Stephensons and oversees the personal injury department.
Kate qualified as a solicitor in 1996 after completing her training contract at Stephensons. She qualified into clinical negligence, an area she had developed a keen interest in during her final year at Newcastle Polytechnic, whilst completing her law degree.
She then spent ten years in clinical negligence, building up a niche caseload which included cerebral palsy cases, gynaecological cases, and fatal claims, involving large dependency claims. She headed up the department from 2002 to 2006, when she moved across to head up the large personal injury team here at Stephensons.
Kate’s team consists of over 30 personal injury specialists, who deal with a wide range of personal injury claims.
Due to the size of the team, Kate spends a considerable amount of time on supervisory, regulatory and business development areas, but does retain a small, niche caseload of her own, focussing on higher value claims, including catastrophic claims, fatalities and complex CICA claims.
Kate is a member of APIL and is the regional coordinator for the Manchester regional MASS group.
She is recommended in the Legal 500. The 2018 edition said:
"Stephensons Solicitors LLP has the ‘client at the forefront of its mind; the team will not compromise on quality and provides a timely and professional service to clients while ensuring that the client has at all times a good understanding of the process and the desired outcomes’. The ‘honest, caring, knowledgeable, professional and passionate’ Kate Sweeney leads the personal injury team and ‘always shows a genuine interest in what is best for the accident victim’."
She is passionate about ensuring access to justice for all Stephensons personal injury clients, and that they receive the best possible service whilst in the hands of her team.
Kate Sweeney was invited to attend a roundtable of industry leaders, hosted by the Law Society Gazette, to discuss the impact of far-reaching civil justice reforms for personal injury lawyers.
