Main purpose of the job: 

Legal Aid Crime:  This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a minimum of 12 months PQE with an existing criminal duty solicitor qualification who is able to gain immediate admission to duty solicitor schemes.  You will be responsible for managing a case load of legally aided criminal cases and building a department from the ground up. 

The fee-earning part of the role involves advising and assisting clients in PACE interviews at the police stations during social and unsocial hours, Magistrates Court preparation and Advocacy and Crown Court Litigation, Court and Police Station Duty Solicitor.

Main key result areas

  • To answer telephone enquiries 24/7 as part of the rota system for helplines provided by the department (no extra payments are made for this).
  • Existing Duty Solicitor able to apply for membership of court and police station schemes in and around St Helens and Liverpool.
  • To take part in all Court and Police station rotas across St Helens and Liverpool which will involve working evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays. This is subject to whatever overtime/lieu time arrangements are in place.
  • Assisting the Department Manager in developing relevant areas of the practise and generating work.
  • Control and Management of Work in Progress ensuring that it is recorded and converted into paid Profit Costs effectively and efficiently and that the Profit Costs target of the individual and the team is met and that disbursements and debtors are managed in order to reduce the financial exposure of the Firm.
  • Provide legal services to clients whilst maintaining standards associated with Law Society and SRA rules, Lexcel quality/practice management standards, Legal Aid SQM requirements, Source Provider criteria and worktype/office procedures. Whilst ensuring all targets are met
  • Effective management of own time, ensuring that non chargeable and chargeable hours targets are achieved
  • Keeping abreast of relevant legislation and keeping CPD requirements updated
  • Compliance with Client Care and Complaints Procedures in order to minimise the risk of negligence and comply with Law Society Rules and to report any potential negligence actions as soon as they are found Compliance with client care and complaints procedures
  • To report any potential errors/negligence matters to the work type managing partner as soon as the risk is apparent
  • To delegate effectively and efficiently, ensuring that work on the file is carried out at the right level, thus maximising profitability and assisting the development of other staff
  • Taking responsibility for developing and managing a Case Load, including a full risk assessment of all matters, whilst complying with Legal Aid Franchising criteria/Law Society rules and Work type procedures whilst undertaking ongoing risk assessment and managing clients expectations effectively
  • Control and management of Work in Progress ensuring that it is recorded and converted into paid Profit Costs effectively and efficiently
  • To attend training courses /meetings as required to ensure that you obtain the necessary CPD points by the appropriate date and to ensure that you keep abreast of all relevant legislation
  • Ensuring that disbursements and debtors in the case load are managed in order to reduce the financial exposure of the Firm
  • To actively seek practice development and marketing opportunities with a view to achieving business objectives and developing the caseload.  To seek opportunities to cross refer work within the firm
  • Authorised to undertake such work which may be specified against his or her name
