Andrew Leakey

Managing Partner of Consumer & Dispute Resolution

Andrew graduated from Liverpool University in 1994, having undertaken specialist environmental options. He also won an award for Tax Law in his final year. Andrew undertook his Training Contract with the firm, qualifying in September 1997. In 2002, he was made a Partner.

He became Head of dispute resolution in 2009, looking after the consumer, welfare, debt, housing and employment law teams. All of these teams act for individuals, often facing daunting situations.

Andrew is a vastly experienced civil litigator. In the past he has undertaken large numbers of cases in relation to housing, debt, and consumer issues. This includes professional negligence cases against valuers, solicitors and architects; faulty goods including horses, cars, windows, conservatories, and building disputes.  He has also dealt with several high value inheritance and land disputes. This includes environmental cases, where he has previously been recognised by the Legal 500 in contamination disputes.

He has also assisted the regulatory team, particularly advising on environmental prosecutions that reach appeal including The Environment Agency v Biffa Waste Services, Eurotech. Environmental Ltd (QBD) 23 March 2006 [2006] EWHC 1102(Admin) which led to an acquittal of Eurotech.

Andrew is an expert in consumer litigation, and is “recommended for Consumer Credit Act matters” credited in the 2011 edition of the Legal 500.  He has dealt with ground breaking cases in relation to unenforceable agreements, unfair relationships, hidden commission, irresponsible lending and negligence of brokers. This includes actions by groups of borrowers against lenders, co-ordinating hundreds of cases across England and Wales. 

In demand as a speaker, Andrew has lectured nationally on challenges to consumer credit agreements. He is accredited by the SRA for CPD training. He has spoken at the EU in relation to the BEUC group for consumer advice organisations across the EU, and to the European Commission in relation to the implementation of the EU Mediation Directive.

Andrew has made several media appearances in relation to consumer rights - Panorama, Channel 4 News, The One Show, ITV, Inside Out.

Andrew is a Trustee for the Message Enterprise Centre, supporting work with young people. He also snowboards and plays hockey whenever he can.
