Conference will examine domestic abuse impact on children and families

A leading conference will be held at Manchester Town Hall in September to explore ways to limit the impact of domestic abuse on children and families.

The one-day conference is being hosted by national law firm Stephensons Solicitors LLP on September 11th 2014 and speakers include Tony Lloyd, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester, Abby Ogier, children’s service manager at Barnardo’s, Frances Heaton QC of St John’s Buildings chambers, Emma Scott from the Rights of Women charity and Vicki Hamilton, a chartered clinical child psychologist.

The event will explore the effects of domestic abuse upon children and families and examine how exposure to it affects physical and mental health and emotional development. The conference will also demonstrate how interventions can break the cycle of abuse as well as a look at the latest legal developments in this area.

Mike Devlin, managing partner of the Family department at Stephensons, said: “Every minute, an incident of domestic abuse is reported to the Police and around 30% of adult women will experience domestic abuse at some stage in their lives.”

Victoria Gethin, partner and head of the domestic abuse team at Stephensons, said: “The aim of this conference is to bring those working with domestic abuse survivors together so that we can work as one to provide a multi-agency approach to domestic abuse in the region. By raising awareness and building links between professionals, we can make a difference.”

Up to 200 professionals who work with children and families affected by domestic abuse are expected to attend. To coincide with the conference, Stephensons has released an infographic detailing the key facts about domestic abuse. It can be viewed here: We're here to talk about domestic violence

Tickets for the conference cost £99 plus vat with any profits being donated to domestic abuse charities in the region. Five hours of CPD points are available for this event. Those wishing to attend should complete and return our booking form. The conference will run from 9.00am to 4.00pm.
