Cohabitation on the rise

by Stephen Perry on

With marriage levels at an all time low and the Office for National statistics stating that the number of Civil Partnerships decreased by 18% between 2007 and 2008, it appears that growing numbers of people are choosing to simply co-habit rather than formalise the relationship by marriage or civil partnership.

The Office for National Statistics predicts that there will be an increase of up to 25% in the number of cohabiting couples between now and 2030.

However, the law in relation to co-habiting couples is complicated. There is no such thing as a common law wife or husband and no automatic right to an interest in property.

Whether your relationship has ended or you are thinking of moving in with your current partner, it is important that you seek legal advice so you are aware of your rights.

Cohabitation agreements can help to set out how the parties will arrange their finances during the relationship and what will happen should the relationship come to an end.

We can provide you with advice whether you are thinking of moving in or moving out.
