Case study
Head of Stephenson’s regulatory crime team, Neal Boland, in 2008 represented a car garage which was prosecuted for storing oil filters on site, which were awaiting waste disposal. This is a significant case in that many car garages will not know they must have a licence to store these used filters, even if they are to be taken away for waste disposal within days of being changed. The local authority wanted to push for a prosecution and a potential fine of around £1,000. Stephensons intervened and was able to have the case dropped in light of the fact a license costs a mere £8.
