I studied law at the University of Lancaster and undertook a vacation placement with Stephensons in the summer of 2005 after graduating. I then went on to complete the Legal Practice Course at BPP in Manchester and returned to Stephensons as a Graduate Clerk in 2006.
I applied for a Training Contract with Stephensons primarily because of the excellent reputation the firm has developed over the past thirty years. I was interested in Stephensons for what it represents; a highly successful firm with the ability to provide the best quality, cost effective advice in an open and friendly atmosphere, dealing with a wide spectrum of matters whilst placing clear emphasis on holding the interests and needs of the clients as the utmost priority.
Upon joining the firm, I worked as a Graduate Clerk within the Family department where I gained valuable experience by being challenged and stretched within my role. I have advised clients at initial appointments in relation to various matters including divorce, financial matters, injunctions and matters involving children. Thereafter, I had responsibility for progressing files on a daily basis under the supervision of the fee earners within the department.
I was offered a Training Contract to commence in September 2008. The firm usually accepts applications from law graduates that have already worked at the firm, either through the Vacation Schemes or working as a Graduate Clerk. Applications are by covering letter and CV, following which candidates are asked to complete a series of questions prepared by the HR department. Successful candidates are then invited to attend an assessment day for group activities, with an individual interview the day after.
Stephensons offer a wide range of work types. As part of my Training Contract, I have completed seats in Family and Commercial Litigation and I am currently undertaking my third seat in the Employment Department.
Although at times life as a trainee can be challenging, supervisors are always on hand to offer support and guidance and it is through such training that trainees are able to develop their skills and reach their full potential.
There is a strong sense of community throughout the firm and plenty of opportunity to socialise with colleagues at regular trainee social events and at the annual Christmas Party and Summer BBQ.
I would strongly recommend any potential trainee makes an application to Stephensons.
